Hello again New York. This weekend feels like it’s a bit of a doozy, especially for people getting to midtown on key lines. As with every weekend this winter, the 7 and Q are not running into Manhattan forcing riders onto the N train and others. This weekend also sees the 3 train terminating at Penn Station, although at least all subsequent stations are served by the 2 or 4 this weekend. So there will be fewer trains plying through Midtown and all those workers and socializers will have to find alternate trains. In good MTA news. The MTA announced the its real time bus location software has been such a hit that it will expand to The Bronx and one other borough (I would guess Manhattan) this year and the whole city will have every single bus location in real time by the end of next year! Check it out at the MTA‘s website. Plus, the MTA is now allowing 7-day and 30-day metrocard users to refill their card at metrocard machines without having to receive a new piece of plastic. An overdue bit environmental stewardship and added convenience. A good week for improvements at the MTA. Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of January 21

Three weeks into a multi-month shortening of the Q train on weekends, we begin another multi-month project on the 7 train. For the next 11 weekends there will be no 7 train service between Queensboro Plaza and Times Square. Perhaps of more concern is that during that time, The Court Square station on the 7 train will be closed at all times. This is actually a bigger concern for riders of the G train since most riders of the 7 using Court Square are transferring to the G. The G is already an inconvenient train to rely on and now it will lose an important transfer for nearly three months. As for the rest of this weekend, there are some small changes on the 2, 5, C, F, J, and R. But the biggest issues are on the Q and 7. Happy Tracks New York!
UPDATE: The MTA has cancelled all subway work this weekend EXCEPT on the 7 line, due to anticipated snowfall. All lines are normal except the 7 which will terminate at Queensboro Plaza. The 42 St Shuttle will run overnight, and Q trains will be extended to Ditmars Blvd during the day on Saturday and Sunday. The map has been updated. Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of January 14th

This weekend is looking much the same as last weekend. The 3 train is running to New Lots but to make up for that, there will be no L train service between Lorimer St and Broadway Jct. The Q train is still out between Prospect Park and 57th St, which will be the case all winter. Lastly, get ready because next weekend begins 11 weekends of no 7 train service into Manhattan. At the same time 7 trains will begin skipping Court Sq. Yeesh. I hope no one was to confused by the start of MTA’s weeknight line closures. They will be continuing in future weeks with different line so I’ll keep you informed. In better news, did you know you can now see exactly where every bus on Staten Island is on the MTA’s website? Cool stuff for Staten Island! Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of January 7 2012

Well it’s a new year and it’s a new opportunity for the MTA to do weekend work. Of note this weekend is the Q train which is not running between Prospect Park and 57th St. The biggest news is that this work will continue every weekend for a couple of months into early March. You can click the map below or the “this weekend” tab above to see the weekend’s service. The more significant work, however, begins on Monday night when work begins overnight on the Lexington Avenue line. At 10 PM each night next week, the 4/5/6 lines will shut down between Grand Central and Atlantic Ave. So be prepared on Monday night everyone. Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of New Year’s

Happy New Year’ everyone. As last weekend, the MTA is not doing any construction work because of the big holiday. As last weekend, click on the “normal weekend service” tab above for a view of weekend service with long-term service. As a side note, there will be no exits to stations in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. All exits at Times Square will be on 8th Ave and the N, R, and 1 trains will skip 49th and 50th Sts on New Year’s Eve. Have a great 2012 and Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of Dec. 17

It’s another very slow weekend for the crews of the MTA. Not much to report as the only major work will be on the 5, 7, D, J, and N. Of larger concern is the SubwayWeekender app. I’m sure those of you who have purchased it realize that it is crashing. This is due to the reboot of the site changing the code the app used to download the map from the site. Unfortunately, my developers are ducking me right now and I’m not having any luck meeting with them. If there’s anyone out there who can take a look at the app and tweak it I would appreciate it. I will continue to press my developers and try to have the app fixed in a few weeks. Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of Dec. 10

So at the moment I still have a basic site but I still can get the map up since December is a slow month for the MTA. All the shoppers headed to SoHo and 5th Ave and Atlantic Terminal and Queens Center make for busy weekends on the trains and buses so work is kept light. Click on the map below to view the map and safe shopping. Please forgive the basic layout and I will work on sprucing it up shortly. Happy Tracks New York!
